Opportunity for a Research Assistant

Job Description: The Redding and Al-Sady labs at UCSF have a Staff Research Associate opportunity. Broadly, a central project in the labs centers on exploring the behavior of chromatin fibers on the single molecule and ensemble level. This position will involve establishing and maintaining chromatin production in the Al-Sady and Redding laboratories required for this project. We are looking for a candidate excited about biochemical and biophysical approaches, is eager to learn and comfortable with quantitative thinking. The candidate will work under direct supervision and will be responsible for expression of proteins and reconstitution of chromatin. The incumbent will work with a team of scientists to help design, optimize, and produce a wide range of chromatinized DNA substrates for use in single molecule and ensemble experiments. General lab managerial tasks such as cataloging and ordering reagents are part of the position, and other duties as assigned. The Al-Sady and Reddings labs are a highly collaborative space that is pushing the cutting edge of chromatin biology. 

 A minimum 2 year commitment is strongly preferred.

Job Responsibilities: Expression and purification of histone proteins, fluorescent labeling of histones and native chemical ligation of modified histone tails.Reconstitution of chromatin.  Production of DNA templates for single molecule experiments, DNA curtains visualization and analysis. Lab coordination: maintenance of laboratory stocks, coordinate operation of lab, organization strain databases, regulatory compliance, equipment repair, shipment of biologics, perform other duties as assigned.

Education: BS/BS degree in a relevant field.

Experience: Experience working in a biology or biomedical research lab. Demonstrated experience with yeast genetics and genomics as well as standard molecular biology techniques.

• ability to maintain comprehensive laboratory notebook of experiments done on a daily basis 

• ability to work independently and assess need for assistance from supervisor

• Experience with protein purification

• understanding of peptide and protein chemistry is a big plus.  

Licensure/Certification/Registration: None required.

Physical Requirements: Normal physical requirements include good visual acuity and accurate color discrimination. The position requires excellent manual dexterity and familiarity utilizing delicate instrumentation.
